England beat Sri Lanka to clinch T20 series early - Dawn

In Cardiff, United Kingdom, England’s cricket team defeated Sri Lanka by six wickets in the second Twenty20 International match and secured an early victory in the series. England took a 2-0 lead in the three-match series, meaning the result of the final game on Saturday at Old Trafford will no longer affect the outcome.

As Dawn reports, England reached the target of 146 runs with nearly eight overs to spare. Tom Banton was the team’s top scorer with an unbeaten 52 off 24 balls, including four sixes.

England’s rapid chase

Jos Buttler and England captain Harry Brook made an active start to the chase. After seven overs, England were on 79 for three. Buttler scored 30 runs off 16 balls and became the first cricketer to surpass 15,000 runs in the T20 format.

In the first match of the series, held on Tuesday in Southampton, England thrashed Sri Lanka by 119 runs. The victory in Cardiff was England’s 14th consecutive win in T20 matches against Sri Lanka.

Dawson halted Sri Lanka’s start

Sri Lanka, whom Brook sent in to bat first, scored 56 runs during the powerplay. However, in the final over of that period, Liam Dawson took two wickets in two consecutive balls. He had Lahiru Udara, who scored 21 runs, dismissed after a catch by Jamie Overton at long-on, and on the next ball caught a shot from Kamil Mishara himself.

Dawson finished with figures of three wickets for 32 runs and was named player of the match. Jofra Archer took two wickets in the final over, while Sri Lanka completed their innings on 145 for nine. Opening batter Pathum Nissanka was the visitors’ top scorer with 37 runs.

Brook called his team’s performance very good and noted that England managed to recover after their opponents’ successful start. Sri Lanka captain Charith Asalanka described the team’s display as disappointing and said his side needed to improve ahead of the three-match ODI series against England.
