Brentford v Liverpool live: Salah returns and Ekitike starts as Reds bid to end Premier League losing streak

Liverpool head to Brentford looking to bounce back from three consecutive defeats in the Premier League

Brentford host Liverpool as the Premier League champions look to get their title defence back on track following three consecutive defeats in the competition.

The Reds opened their campaign with five wins in a row before Arne Slot’s side stumbled to late defeats at Crystal Palace and Chelsea. Harry Maguire’s late header then floored the champions, as Manchester United won their first match at Anfield in nine years, but Liverpool bounced back with a confident 5-1 win at Eintracht Frankfurt on Wednesday.

Liverpool, though, could expect some more rough treatment and aerial duels against a Brentford side who are one of the most physical and direct teams in the league under Keith Andrews.

Reds boss Slot dropped Mohamed Salah to the bench for the trip to Frankfurt but now recalls the forward following Alexander Isak’s groin injury, with Hugo Ekitike starting too. Follow live updates from Brentford v Liverpool, below

Liverpool are now behind Manchester United in the table

Manchester United have beaten Brighton 4-2 for their third win in a row in the Premier League, a result which takes Ruben Amorim’s side up to fourth.

In fact, it moves them above Liverpool by a point - before the Reds look to end their run of three defeats in a row in the Premier League.

Arne Slot admits Trent Alexander-Arnold factor could play part in Mohamed Salah’s poor form

Arne Slot has played down Mohamed Salah’s slow start to season but admitted Liverpool’s adjustment to life without Trent Alexander-Arnold could be a factor.

“He played with Trent his whole Liverpool career, so it could (be that),” Slot said when asked about Salah’s drop in form. “He's been in promising positions often enough to score goals, but maybe with Trent even more.

“But in general, if you have quite a few changes in the summer you have to find new connections. Mo is not an exception to this because he’s also a human being, like all the others.”

Virgil van Dijk reveals Liverpool players’ meeting after defeat to Man United

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk insists Monday’s players’ meeting was not for “crisis” talks but he felt he had to deliver a message to the squad.

“On Monday everyone was sad because we lost to Man United at home,” said Van Dijk. “It was tough under the circumstances so on Monday we came together but it wasn’t a crisis meeting.

“Nobody wants to lose four games in a row but it was the situation we faced. Obviously we also had a proper debrief with the manager but we also had a separate one as players.

“I wanted to say some things. It’s not something I do after every game. After my meeting everyone was happy!”

Liverpool boss Arne Slot backs Mohamed Salah to find scoring form again

Liverpool head coach Arne Slot insists the last thing he is worried about is Mohamed Salah ending his goal drought.

“I don’t know if it’s sharpness or not. It’s so difficult, I could come up with a few reasons which I’m not sure are the reasons,” said the Reds boss.

“In general in football players miss chances and Mo is a human being as well. We are not used to him missing chances, let alone a few in a row, but these things can happen.

“It’s easier to finish a chance if you are 3-1 up than if you are 1-0 down but maybe that is not true for him.

“But the main thing is Mo has always scored goals for our club and the last thing I worry about is Mo starting to score goals again.

“That is what he has done his whole life and that is what I expect him to do in the upcoming weeks and months for our club as well.”
