Indian women’s table tennis team stages comeback win against Singapore at Asian Games 2026

The Indian women’s table tennis team commenced their Asian Games 2026 campaign with a remarkable come-from-behind victory over Singapore in their Group F match on September 20.

At one stage, India trailed 1-2 and faced the prospect of defeat. However, Sreeja Akula and Yashaswini Ghorpade secured crucial wins to clinch the tie.

The encounter began with Yashaswini Ghorpade defeating Jian Zeng 3-1, with game scores of 11-7, 11-3, 8-11, 11-9, according to ESPN. In the second match, Sreeja Akula faced Loy Ming. After three games, Ming led 2-1, having won the third game 11-9. Sreeja won the fourth 11-4, forcing a decider, but ultimately lost the match 8-11, 11-4, 9-11, 11-4, 6-11 (2-3).

Next, Diya Chitale was defeated 3-1 by Tan Zhao, with scores 7-11, 4-11, 11-7, 5-11, putting Singapore ahead 2-1 in the tie.

Sreeja Akula returned for a must-win match against Zeng Jian. She lost the first game 6-11 but won the next three 11-3, 11-7, 11-4, securing a 3-1 victory to level the tie at 2-2.

The decider featured Yashaswini Ghorpade against Loy Ming. Ghorpade emerged victorious 5-11, 11-8, 12-10, 4-11, 11-9 (3-2), sealing a 3-2 overall win for India.

Historically, India has won three bronze medals in table tennis at the Asian Games. The women’s team now maintains hopes of achieving a historic gold.
