Former Man Utd wonderkid Mateo Mejia enjoys dream nine-minute debut at new club after summer move

A former Manchester United academy talent is making the most of another fresh start.

Manchester United had high hopes for Mateo Mejia when the club swooped to sign him from Real Zaragoza in 2019.

An injury on his under-18s debut set the tone for an injury-plagued spell at Carrington, preventing the forward from fulfilling his potential.

United sold Mejia to Sevilla in January 2024, where he went into their B squad to continue the belated development he showed for United’s under-21s.

Mateo Mejia scores on Burgos debut

Mateo Mejia left Sevilla in July in a permanent deal, after making only one appearance for the La Liga side’s first team.

Mejia signed with second-tier side Burgos, where he hopes to stand a better chance of playing first team football.

Now 22, Mejia needs to play competitive games, and he made the most of his opportunity on his debut for his new club.

Mejia came off the bench for the final nine minutes of Burgos’ home game with Cultural Leonesa, with his side leading 4-1.

After coming on in the 81st minute, Mejia scored in the 83rd, putting the finishing touches on a 5-1 victory.

It was the perfect start, with Burgos’ match report stating: “Mejia could not have had a better debut, as two minutes after coming on, he scored the fifth goal, finishing off a killer pass from Chapela in the six-yard box, after he pulled off a brilliant run from the middle of the field.”

Mateo Mejia thankful for dream start

Mateo Mejia made the right call by stepping down a level, where he stands a better chance of playing regular first team football.

He wrote on Instagram: “No better way to start; home victory with our people, you guys are amazing.

The first of many. 💪🏽 Thank you fans for your welcome, and how nice to celebrate my first goal with you. ⚽️ Let’s go for more!”

Mejia’s former Manchester United teammates reached out to congratulate him, including Alvaro Fernandez, now at Real Madrid.
