The Sooners found something offensively on their third drive of the game before disaster struck.

On third and goal from the 2-yard line, Mateer faked a handoff and rolled to his left. And then the ball popped right out of his hand. It was scooped up Georgia’s Chris Cole and returned 85 yards for a touchdown.

An absolute killer for the Sooners, just as they gained some confidence offensively.

Owen Heinecke injury update as OU football trails Georgia in second quarter

Oklahoma linebacker Owen Heinecke is in the injury tent after favoring his right leg.

Heinecke appeared to injure himself on the previous drive but ran out to give it a go. After playing a few plays, he limped off the field.

It was clear Heinecke was in pain and limped before each play.

The bad news keeps piling on for the Sooners as Heinecke is one of their leaders and best defensive players.

Entering Saturday's game, Heinecke led OU with 24 total tackles.

The Bulldogs lead the Sooners 14-0 in the second quarter on ESPN.

It was clear on OU's first drive it is trying to spread the Bulldogs' defense out as the Sooners went with more of an air-raid look.

Quarterback John Mateer's 12-yard pass to Rocky Beers gave OU one first down but the Sooners had to punt after gaining just one yard after that.

Notably, Jacob Ulrich punted it for OU. Grayson Miller has been the starter all season.

Kirby Smart's numbers at Georgia are ridiculous. He's 120-21 overall, including 58-5 at home. Five home losses in 10-plus seasons as head coach.

That's the history OU is up against today at Sanford Stadium — which is all concrete and steel and no frills. That's one thing about SEC stadiums. They're gigantic, but they're not much to look at. I've been to all but Texas, Auburn and Arkansas. OU might have the coolest exterior of all.

The surrounding campus at Georgia is serene, with huge trees and steep hills. This is the Sooners' first trip to Athens. Georgia will make its first trip to Norman in 2028.

Georgia football scouting report for Week 4 vs. Oklahoma

Record: 3-0 (1-0 SEC)

Best player: Third-year Bulldog KJ Bolden is perhaps the best safety in the country. He has collected seven tackles this season and was a member of the SEC coaches All-SEC Second Team last season. In 2025, he finished with 76 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, two interceptions and five pass breakups. The struggling Sooners offense will have their hands full.

The case for Georgia: In his second season as the Bulldogs' starter, Gunner Stockton looks more comfortable and is playing like one of the most confident quarterbacks in the country. He needed just 13 completions to defeat Arkansas. Coach Kirby Smart's defense is once again of the nation's best units as 28 of its 40 points allowed have come in the fourth quarter against Georgia's backups. There's a world where the Bulldogs blow the Sooners out.

The case for OU: The Bulldogs haven't played anyone. Georgia smoked Arkansas on the road but the Razorbacks might be one of the worst power conference teams in the country, if not the worst. UGA's other wins are against Tennessee State and Western Kentucky. The Sooners can only hope the step up in competition gets to the Bulldogs. It's also safe to say OU has an elite defense again, which is likely to keep them in the game. If Mateer and the Sooners' offense can avoid mistakes and come up with a few big plans, they have a chance in a raucous environment.
