Former India boxer Vijender Singh has set the internet on fire through a social media post where he raised the question whether age fraud had settled in cricket. The post came only a couple of days after Rajasthan Royals (RR)’s 14-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi hit a 35-ball century against Gujarat Titans (GT), making him trend on the internet and in press conferences all around the country.

Age fraud is the practice of misrepresenting a player’s age, usually to help them compete against younger players or help their careers. It is a significant problem in Indian sports, particularly at the junior and age-group levels, but there’s no public proof available of Suryavanshi or any other young cricketers breaking the law.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has strict rules against it and has taken stringent measures to address the issue, including stricter verification processes, recently.

“Bhai aaj kal umar choti ker ke cricket me bhe khelne lage (Have players have started reducing their age in cricket too?)," asked the Olympic Games bronze medallist Vijender on X (formerly Twitter), with a thinking emoji.

Many on social media have already been questioning Suryavanshi‘s age, who is the youngest player to play and score a century in the IPL.

The 14-year-old Suryavanshi shattered a stack of records with his hundred against the Titans at RR’s home, the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur on Monday. While there was a lot of praise for him, including from greats of the game, a section of fans couldn’t find any other explanation for his talent except for ‘age fraud’.

“Even if this Vaibhav guy did age fraud, such insane power-hitting at the age of 15-16 is crazyyy man," posted a user on X.

Another user posted an old video of Vaibhav giving an interview and claimed, “Vaibhav is definitely older than he states."

“No way Vaibhav Suryavanshi is 14 years old. This is a 3-4-year-old video where he himself accepted that he looks younger than his age and defo not 15! This case should be deeply investigated by @BCCI, and ban him if found guilty."
