What an over that was — absolute chaos and class rolled into one. Mitchell Marsh was in beast mode, treating Kuldeep Yadav with disdain through the first five balls. It began with a dragged-down delivery that Marsh pulled over mid-wicket for four, followed by a monstrous flat six that barely had any elevation but cleared the ropes with ease. He wasn’t done — another boundary through mid-wicket and a towering straight hit made it look like he was batting on a different pitch altogether.

But cricket always finds a way to turn. On the very next ball, Marsh went for one big shot too many, aiming to clear long-off again. This time, Abhishek Sharma makes no mistake and perfectly and holds on perfectly under pressure. Kuldeep finally gets his man after an onslaught that had the Indian camp on edge. A brief chat between Suryakumar Yadav and Kuldeep after the wicket says it all — relief mixed with a touch of admiration for Marsh’s breathtaking 46 off 26.

He starts by finding the gaps for a couple of twos before unleashing a massive blow straight down the ground — a clean strike that sails into the sightscreen. Marsh looks in complete control, reading Chakaravarthy’s variations with ease. Inglis, on the other hand, is still searching for rhythm, unable to pierce the field. Australia continue to cruise, and India are in desperate need of something special to break this stand.

Jasprit Bumrah returns for the third over of his spell, and suddenly the Australian charge seems to have eased off. Smart batting from the visitors, but not quite what India would’ve hoped for. The longer the wait for a breakthrough, the trickier it gets. And just as that thought settles in, Josh Inglis tries to improvise — attempts a flick over fine leg but mistimes it completely. It even had shades of Suryakumar Yadav’s scoop shot. Inglis just can’t find the timing today, tries the ramp again off the final ball, and misses once more.

Finally, an attacking bowling change for India as Varun Chakaravarthy comes into the attack. He strikes almost immediately! Travis Head tries to go big down the ground, but Tilak Varma pulls off a stunning catch right at the long-off boundary. Suryakumar Yadav will be proud of that effort. A huge breakthrough for India just when they needed it.

A bit of a mix-up behind the stumps there. Varun Chakaravarthy darts one down the leg side, Inglis tries to glance it fine but makes no contact. The ball clips his thigh pad and sneaks past as Samson dives but can’t gather cleanly. Some action, but nothing to worry about for either side.

Free hit, and Marsh makes it count! Harshit Rana’s over has started in the worst possible way. A no-ball to begin with, followed by a length delivery that Mitchell Marsh absolutely smokes. He rocks back, pulls it cleanly, and sends it soaring over square leg for six. That was brutal. Marsh isn’t here to mess around. Serious questions need to be asked if Harshit Rana continues to bowl in the power play.

SIX, FOUR: Travis Head finally breaks the shackles with the first six of the innings — and follows it up with a boundary in the same over! A length ball drifting onto his pads, and Head whips it with that trademark flick of the wrists. It just clears the cushions at deep backward square leg — not the cleanest strike, but enough to clear the long boundary and get Australia going. A couple of balls later, Harshit Rana angles one across, Head throws his hands at it, and a thick outside edge flies past a diving wide slip for four more.

A mixed bag from Bumrah in that over — brilliance and frustration in equal measure. He first produced a peach that jagged back sharply off the seam, beating everyone, including Mitchell Marsh, and flying over off stump for four byes despite Samson’s desperate dive. But the follow-up was completely off radar — a wild delivery down leg that kept drifting away to gift Australia five wides. Eleven runs in two balls, and Bumrah can only shake his head in disbelief.

Mitchell Marsh and Travis Head are far too smart to take unnecessary risks against Jasprit Bumrah early on. With the pitch offering unpredictable bounce, even reading him has become a challenge.

But India desperately need wickets, and plenty of them, inside the powerplay to have any real chance of putting Australia under pressure at this stage.

A horrible mix-up brings India’s innings to an abrupt end at 125. A full delivery outside off, pushed gently to the right of the bowler, and Bumrah instinctively sets off for a run. But Chakravarthy hesitates, unsure of the call, leaving both batters stranded mid-pitch. Ellis calmly collects the ball, strolls to the stumps, and removes the bails with Bumrah still halfway down. A tame and chaotic finish to what’s been a forgettable batting performance from India.

India lose a big wicket, but not before Abhishek lights up the MCG. The entertaining knock finally comes to an end, and Abhishek walks off to a warm ovation from the crowd. After being peppered with wide yorkers, Ellis outsmarts him with a clever change in line — a pinpoint yorker aimed right at the base of middle and leg. Abhishek shuffles across, expecting another wide one, but is caught plumb in front as the ball sneaks under his bat. A fine innings ends on 68 off 37, filled with crisp timing and fearless strokeplay.

Finally, Abhishek Sharma gets back on strike — and he wastes no time making it count!

After waiting an eternity at the non-striker’s end, he unleashes straight away, hammering 15 runs in the over. That’s the spark India desperately needed.

If Abhishek can face even 8 of the remaining 12 deliveries, India might just sneak past 150. And with Australia already behind on over-rate, they’ll need an extra fielder inside the circle — things could get interesting!
