Nathaniel Brown: Bayern deal Man United deadly blow over German star

Manchester United’s pursuit of Nathaniel Brown has suffered a decisive blow from Bayern Munich, according to the latest reports from Germany.

Reinforcing the Backline

Despite Luke Shaw defying expectations by playing every Premier League match this season, there is tacit recognition at Old Trafford that this was only possible due to a reduced workload.

The absence of European football and early exits from the cup competitions limited United – and Shaw – to one game per week, enabling the 30-year-old full-back to properly recuperate between matches.

With a return to the Champions League next year, as well as hopes for deeper runs in the FA Cup and Carabao Cup, INEOS are prioritising a new left-back to provide an alternative for Michael Carrick to rely on.

A pair of highly rated options at domestic rivals – Arsenal’s Myles Lewis-Skelly and Newcastle United’s Lewis Hall – are understood to be the leading targets. However, moves for either English starlet will prove costly to prise from their respective clubs.

This has led United to consider alternatives on the continent, such as Brown – Eintracht Frankfurt’s 22-year-old left-back.

The Germany international, who is set to play a key role for Julian Nagelsmann’s side at the World Cup this month, is a flying full-back, capable of bombing forward and wreaking havoc in the opposition half on the overlap.

Three goals and seven assists last year, followed by four goals and six assists this season, illustrate an all-action threat with the speed and stamina to dominate an entire flank on his own.

If Matheus Cunha is to continue as United’s starting left winger moving forward, a left-back with the profile of Brown will prove key to balancing Carrick’s side, given the Brazilian’s tendency to cut inside on his favoured right foot.

The Sky Sports reporter reveals Brown wants to “join Bayern with immediate effect” after holding “positive talks” with Vincent Kompany, the manager at the Allianz Arena. A long-term contract until 2031 has already been agreed, with the Bundesliga champions now entering into formal talks with Frankfurt over a deal.

And while Plettenberg claims negotiations could still “fail over the transfer fee”, when Bayern make their move for a German talent, it usually only ends with one conclusion: a new signing arriving in Bavaria.
