Fernando Gago undergoes emergency surgery for a heart condition after collapsing during a press conference

Fernando Gago sparked alarm bells in South American football after being rushed to hospital in Chile and undergoing surgery due to a cardiovascular issue. The Argentine coach, currently in charge of Universidad de Chile, remains under medical observation while specialists monitor his recovery.

The situation came to light after Gago failed to attend a scheduled training session with his team. The Chilean club initially reported that the coach was undergoing medical tests, and it was later confirmed that he required surgery, meaning he will not be on the bench for the upcoming Copa Chile match.

Universidad de Chile’s sporting director, Manuel Mayo, stayed by Gago’s side throughout his time in the clinic and revealed their brief conversation after the procedure:

“I went into his room and he was already talking about Sunday’s game, about players we had been discussing together. I told him it wasn’t the time — that he needed to stay calm, rest today, and we’d see how he feels tomorrow. He’s going to be very eager to talk, so we’ll have to manage a few things, hopefully once he’s discharged,” he explained.

The former Boca Juniors and Real Madrid midfielder suffered complications related to a cardiovascular condition that required immediate medical attention. After being transferred to a hospital in Santiago, doctors decided to perform surgery.
