Iyer got injured during the third ODI against Australia in Sydney while taking a stunning running catch to dismiss Australian batsman Alex Carey. He had to run back from point and, after taking the catch, hurt his rib while tumbling down to the ground to contact the grass.

“Shreyas Iyer sustained an impact injury to his left lower rib cage region while fielding during the third ODI against Australia in Sydney on 25th October 2025. He was taken to the hospital for further evaluation. Scans have revealed a laceration injury to the spleen. He is under treatment, medically stable, and recovering well. The BCCI Medical Team, in consultation with specialists in Sydney and India, is closely monitoring his injury status. The Indian Team Doctor will remain in Sydney with Shreyas to evaluate his day-to-day progress,” read a statement from BCCI secretary, Devajit Saikia.

Iyer didn’t field for the remainder of the innings and was rushed to the hospital after he complained of severe pain in his ribs. India proceeded to register a nine-wicket win in a 237-run chase with veterans Rohit Sharma (121 not out) and Virat Kohli (74 not out) setting up a match-winning partnership.

Iyer’s career has been marred by injury for quite some time now.

The Indian middle-order batsman had earlier written to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) that he will be taking a ‘break from red ball cricket’ for some time due to stiffness and fatigue issues in his back. The board had accepted his request.

The 30-year-old played two innings on the tour, scoring 11 and 68 in Perth and Adelaide, respectively.
