Kai Rooney's announcement and Man Utd ban as dad Wayne speaks out

Kai Rooney currently features amongst the most talked-about emerging prospects in English football. He followed in the footsteps of his iconic father, Wayne, by joining Manchester United's youth setup at just 11 years of age. Given Wayne's status as United's all-time leading scorer and Kai's position as an attacking player, parallels were unavoidable for the 16-year-old, whose progress has been under intense scrutiny.

Despite this, he has continued to impress whilst advancing through the United junior ranks. Rooney Jr, who originally began as a centre-forward but now operates on the right flank, even made his Old Trafford debut in January when representing the club's Under-18s in the FA Youth Cup.

Boot ban

The left-sided attacker landed a footwear agreement with Puma in 2022. The prominent sportswear brand brought him on board at just 12 years old, following an exceptional 56-goal season.

Kai confirmed the arrangement, which has resulted in him sporting Puma footwear and attire ever since, through an Instagram announcement proclaiming: "Great to sign for @puma. Only see great."

But Wayne recently revealed how his son receives no special treatment within the United academy, explaining that Kai cannot wear his Puma footwear for the U16s, due to club regulations.

Wayne said on The Smith Brothers: Not A Podcast: "He's obviously with Puma but when he plays for the Manchester United U16s, something which I really like is he can't wear his Puma boots.

"All the academy have to wear the same boots. They do it because there's people from areas where they can't afford certain boots so I think it's really good. But he's played for the U18s a few times and he can then wear his Puma boots. He's doing well to be fair to him."

Fresh contract 'proposal'

In February, Rooney dismissed speculation that he had been presented with a lucrative fresh contract by United. The Sun claimed that Rooney, who turns 17 in November, had been offered an initial one-year scholarship, which would convert into a three-year professional arrangement worth approximately £50,000-a-week plus an annual signing-on fee.

The report indicated that the proposal had been accepted by the Rooney family, and numerous other media sources later reported the same. Nevertheless, the youngster promptly refuted this on social media.
