FIFA is in discussions with national associations to increase prize money for all 48 teams participating in the FIFA World Cup 2026, as the organization moves forward from a position of record financial strength. The proposal will need approval at Tuesday’s FIFA Council meeting, which is being held ahead of the 76th FIFA Congress in Vancouver. In December, FIFA announced that prize money for the 2026 tournament would be 50% higher than the previous edition, reaching $655 million, following a record $727 million financial contribution to the event. However, FIFA has told Reuters that the prize pool is expected to increase further. The governing body is projected to surpass $11 billion in revenue during the current four-year cycle from 2023 to 2026, marking its strongest financial position to date.“FIFA can confirm it is in discussions with associations around the world to increase available revenues,” a FIFA spokesperson said.“This includes a proposed increase of financial contributions to all qualified teams for the FIFA World Cup 2026 and of development funding available to all 211 member associations.“The FIFA World Cup 2026 will be groundbreaking in terms of its financial contribution to the global football community, and FIFA is proud to be in its strongest ever financial position to benefit the global game through its FIFA Forward programme.”Under FIFA’s initial funding package, the largest portion of the $655 million was allocated as performance-based payments for the 48 participating teams.According to the December announcement, the tournament winners would receive $50 million, while the runners-up would earn $33 million. Teams eliminated in the group stage were set to receive $9 million each.In addition, every qualified team would be entitled to $1.5 million to cover preparation costs.FIFA’s 2025 annual report also stated that 93% of its total budgeted revenue had already been contracted by the end of 2025, driven largely by the success of the inaugural 32-team Club World Cup held in the United States last year. The 2026 World Cup is scheduled to take place from June 11 to July 19 across the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
