Iga Swiatek posts message on social media after her surprise defeat to Clara Tauson in Montreal

She might be the reigning Wimbledon champion, but Iga Swiatek was left stunned by Clara Tauson at the Canadian Open on Sunday.

The Polish performer was somewhat out of sorts as she went down 7-6, 6-3 to the Danish performer, seeded 16 for this tournament.

Swiatek was praised by Eva Lys earlier in the tournament after she edged through, but she fell at the third hurdle to an in-form Tauson.

Swiatek surprised herself at Wimbledon by taking the title, and now she will be eyeing a return to the top of the WTA rankings.

Swiatek was simply beaten by the better player in Montreal and now she will hope to reset ahead of the Cincinnati Open and then the US Open.

The 24-year-old will be among the contenders to win the title, and after losing to Tauson, she has posted a very classy message on social media.

Swiatek posted: “Merci Montreal! Of course, I wished for a better result but it was an incredible experience to play in front of you all. See you next time!”

Swiatek will now move on quickly from this defeat and learn from the defeat against a lower-ranked player.

Swiatek can make waves at the US Open

Having tasted success at Wimbledon, Swiatek will now be confident that she can go all the way at the US Open and continue climbing the rankings.

This loss to Tauson is merely a setback and won’t deter Swiatek from the task that awaits her at the US Open when it gets underway at the end of this month.

Swiatek will begin the tournament as one of the favourites for the title, and she will hope to leave with another Grand Slam crown to her name.

Swiatek is quickly becoming one of the modern greats, and with six Grand Slam titles to her name already, it feels like she will cement her place at the game’s top table when her career eventually draws to a close.
