Tomic’s first quarterfinal in seven years ends in 50min disaster

Bernard Tomic was unable to extend his run at the Los Cabos Open after falling to a straight set defeat in the quarter-finals against Cameron Norrie.

The Australian star, who was competing in his first ATP quarter-final match in seven years, was dismissed 6-1, 6-0 on the hard courts in Mexico on Friday.

Tomic held serve in the opening game of the match but from there on out, he was on the backfoot, making little movement around the court as he fell to a 6-1 defeat in the first set in 25 minutes.

The 33-year-old did not find any momentum to change the result in the second and final set, with Norrie continuing to dominant in all areas of the match.

Tomic did, however, manage to save nine break points throughout his quarter-final battle, but his service game ultimately proved a costly factor.

Winning just 47 per cent of his first serves and 35 per cent of his second serves, Tomic was dismissed by Norrie in 50 minutes.

“I’m pleased with the result,” Norrie, the world No.39 said.

“I was very solid, I returned well, I made a lot of tough balls when I needed to.

“It’s nice to go to bed a little bit earlier.”

The victory marks the first ATP semi-final the British sensation has played in this season. He will now face Canada’s Denis Shapovalov in the semi-finals.

“He’s really confident at the moment,” Norrie said when informed of his next opponent, who also happens to be the reigning tournament champion.

“When he’s confident, he’s one of the toughest guys in the world to play. But I’m going to focus on myself, enjoy tonight, and get ready for the match.”

For Tomic, the defeat comes two weeks after he, a former world No.17, won the challenge title in Lincoln - the biggest tournament title he has won since 2018.
