Galway United get past Bohs to earn precious win

Galway United defeated Bohemians 2-0 at Eamonn Deacy Park thanks to goals in either half by Patrick Hickey and David Hurley.

Both teams entered this SSE Airtricity Men's Premier Division fixture having not played a competitive game since the end of September, with a relegation play-off still a possibility for the hosts, while Bohemians remained in the hunt for European football.

The encounter on Corribside also marked a landmark occasion for United striker Stephen Walsh as he made his 369th appearance for the club - resulting in him becoming the top all-time appearance maker for the Tribesmen, and surpassing Kevin Cassidy's former record.

On the pitch, it was Bohs who started the stronger, dominating possession from the get-go, with United failing to gain a grip on proceedings.

It was a game which lacked many major clear-cut chances, but against the run of play, it was the Tribesmen who struck first in the 36th minute.

Bobby Burns was the provider when he delivered a dangerous low ball into the box, which was turned home by Hickey to give John Caulfield’s side the lead, and in turn, net his fifth goal of the season.

United grew in confidence following the opener, and after the half-time break, the game turned into a more end-to-end affair.

Firstly, Bohs had a penalty appeal waved away, before the Tribesmen were awarded a spot-kick of their own in the 59th minute after a foul on Walsh.

The ever-reliable Hurley took up the mantle and confidently found the bottom left-hand side of the net to double United’s advantage.

Alan Reynolds’ outfit searched for a lifeline, but the home backline defended admirably for the remainder of the contest to earn a clean sheet and pick up a crucial three points to edge themselves out of the relegation play-off position for now.

Up next for Galway United is their last home fixture of the season when they welcome Drogheda United next Friday, while Bohemians host St Patrick’s Athletic in three days.
