In Ghana, head coach Eric Tinkler has left football club Asante Kotoko after two months in the job. This happened after the team’s unexpected defeat to Aduana in a Ghana Premier League match, although the opponent was playing with a numerical disadvantage.

The club’s decision

Asante Kotoko said it had agreed to Tinkler’s request to be immediately released from his contract for personal reasons. The South African specialist managed the team in four Ghanaian league matches, of which it won one.

At the same time, Tinkler led the Porcupine Warriors to victory in the 2026 Democracy Cup. Asante Kotoko defeated its arch-rival Hearts of Oak in a penalty shootout.

Analyst’s assessment

Football analyst Kojo Addae Mensah said the coach’s resignation did not come as a surprise to him. As MyJoyOnline reports, after Tinkler’s appointment he had suggested that the specialist would face culture shock due to differences between football infrastructure in South Africa and Ghana, including the quality of pitches.

Addae Mensah, who previously covered Asante Kotoko as a columnist, recalled the club’s training trips to South Africa. According to him, even school football pitches there have a high level of equipment, including lighting. The analyst added that the difficulties he expected for Tinkler emerged earlier than he had predicted.
