US tennis star riles up crowd after furious on-court argument with Grand Slam winner

Things got chippy at the US Open.

Taylor Townsend defeated Jelena Ostapenko in straight sets 7-5, 6-1 at Flushing Meadows, but it's what happened afterwards that stole the spotlight.

When the two players went to shake hands, Ostapenko seemingly started to pop off right in front of Townsend's face.

The Latvian star was displeased by Townsend's actions after the win and was visibly upset with her, causing quite the colorful scene.

The two got into a heated shouting match, to which Townsend quickly dismissed.

The American star proceeded to walk over to the crowd and raise her fists to fire them up. She clearly wasn't fazed by what Ostapenko had to say.

"It’s competition," Townsend said after the match.

"People get upset when they lose. Some people say bad things. She told me I have no class and no education and to see what happens when we get outside the U.S.

"I’m looking forward to it. I beat her in Canada outside the U.S. So let’s see what else she has to say."

Townsend wasn't backing down from the 2017 Grand Slam winner, as she is on to the third round of the US Open for the first time since 2023.

Townsend is the No.139 ranked player in the world, while Ostapenko is ranked No.25, so the Latvian star was probably not too happy with the massive upset.

Townsend is still seeking her first career singles Grand Slam victory. Ostapenko has one to her name, winning the French Open back in 2017.

And while Townsend is still after that elusive first singles title, she is currently the world's No.1 ranked doubles player. She owns two Grand Slam doubles victories, having won the Australian Open in 2025 and Wimbledon in 2024.

Don't get it twisted, the 29-year-old is no stranger to winning on the court.

Townsend will play No. 5 Mirra Andreeva on Friday in the third round, looking to advance to the fourth round for the first time since 2019.

While Townsend will now shift all her attention towards the Russian star, the rest of us will be counting down the days until she gets to face Ostapenko again.
