Moroccan women's football is in mourning after Faten Ben Amar El Azizi, a player for Maghreb Atlétic Tétouan, died in a tragic accident while attempting to cross into the Spanish enclave of Ceuta.

At least 57 migrants died while trying to cross the border from Morocco into Ceuta.

Faten was a familiar face at Maghreb Atlétic Tétouan, where she wore the club's shirt with distinction, and had previously featured for Moghreb Tétouan, establishing herself as one of the more exciting young prospects in the domestic women's game, as GOAL reports.

Promising Career Cut Short

Despite her young age, Faten had already made a noticeable mark on Moroccan women's football.

Her performances across two clubs in the Tétouan region pointed to a player with genuine potential, and those who worked alongside her described her as a committed and talented individual whose career had every chance of reaching greater heights.

The Moroccan Union of Professional Footballers was among the first to respond publicly, releasing a formal statement in the wake of the tragedy.

"At this difficult time, UMFP President Mustapha El Hadaoui, together with all members of the Union, extends its sincere condolences and deepest sympathies to the late player's family, loved ones, teammates, Moghreb de Tanger, and the entire Moroccan football community.

"We share in their grief and pray that the Almighty welcomes her into His infinite mercy, grants her the highest place in Paradise, and gives her family patience, strength, and comfort during this time of loss," the statement read.

The message reflected the widespread grief felt not just by those who knew Faten personally, but by a broader sporting community that recognised what her loss represents for the future of the women's game in Morocco.

We also highlighted facts about former Brazil striker Tassio Maia dos Santos, who tragically lost his life at the age of 41 when a wall collapsed during a severe storm in Rio de Janeiro.

The incident claimed the lives of five individuals, leaving a deep scar in the community and prompting an outpouring of grief from fans and colleagues alike.
