Essendon Football Club has confirmed today an ACL injury to Nic Martin’s right knee and Will Setterfield has suffered a Lisfranc injury in his right foot.Martin’s injury was sustained during the first quarter of last night's match against Richmond at the MCG. Scans this morning revealed the full extent of the damage, ruling Martin out for the remainder of the 2025 season. The incident occurred early in the opening term when Martin’s knee twisted awkwardly during a heavy bump over the boundary line.Essendon General Manager of Football, Daniel McPherson expressed the club's disappointment but also a strong belief in Martin's ability to overcome this significant setback."This is incredibly tough news for Nic and for the entire club," McPherson said.“He's been a vital part of our midfield this season, and his absence will certainly be felt. Our players, coaches, staff, and all Bomber members and supporters will feel his loss. He's had a terrific year and has been critical to our ability to perform week in, week out."We have no doubt Nic will attack his rehabilitation with the same dedication he brings to his football. Nic is a fantastic individual, is part of our Player Leadership Group, and has become a vital member of our team, both on and off the field. He has a strong support network around him, and the club will provide him with every resource necessary to get through this long rehab journey. We're confident that he will return stronger and more determined than ever," McPherson said.Setterfield’s foot injury occurred in the fourth quarter of Saturday night’s game after his foot was stomped on in a contest. The injury will see Setterfield sidelined for the remainder of the 2025 Season, and he is set to consult a surgeon in the coming days.“Will’s effort and intent this season has been terrific, so we are all disappointed that he won’t be back out there this year,” McPherson said. The club will provide further updates on Martin and Setterfield’s rehab and recovery once surgery is confirmed.
