Germany head coach Julian Nagelsmann's frustration erupted in a heated post-game interview following his team's stunning FIFA World Cup elimination by Paraguay, as he snapped at reporter Lili Engels' questions.

Germany, four-time world champions and pre-tournament favorites, crashed out in the Round of 32 after falling 4-3 on penalties following a 1-1 tie.

The loss, which saw a disallowed German goal spark protests and jeers, represented the first occasion Germany had ever been beaten in a World Cup shootout and continued their dismal streak of failing to secure a knockout victory since hoisting the trophy in 2014.

Following an extended spell in the locker room with his crushed players, Nagelsmann went on to address the press, including ZDF reporter Engels. The discussion rapidly became contentious as the 38-year-old coach, already facing enormous scrutiny, grew noticeably agitated by Engels' relentless probing about Germany's lethargic possession game, as per The Mirror US.

"We had a very slow build-up play; it took ages to shift it from wing to wing," Nagelsmann acknowledged, before listing a series of complaints, including a "scandalous" disallowed goal in extra time. "We did get an equalizer, but we could have done that much more frequently."

When Engels challenged him once more on the subject, Nagelsmann fired back: "Yes, I just told you. The build-up play was too slow. I've already said that three times now."

Sensing the tension, Engels then questioned Nagelsmann about his future, with his contract due to expire after Euro 2028. "I am available. If the DFB [German FA] wants it, then I will do the Euro 2028, and if not then they have to tell me," he responded bluntly. "I'm not someone who runs away."

The heat continues to build on Nagelsmann, who became the youngest coach in a World Cup knockout stage in 40 years. Germany's early elimination represents yet another catastrophic failure for a nation that had advanced to at least the semi-finals in four straight tournaments between 2002 and 2014.

During his post-game press conference, Nagelsmann was brutally candid in his assessment of Germany's current standing.

"If you cannot beat Paraguay over 120 minutes then you are deservedly eliminated," he said. "You should not depend on the opponents' luck or no luck."

He went even further, conceding that Germany can no longer be regarded among the world's elite. "If you are eliminated by Paraguay you are just not a first-class football team. I am very disappointed," he said.
