Star Indian wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson has formally requested Rajasthan Royals to release him. According to a report in Cricbuzz on Thursday (August 7), there are serious differences between Samson and RR’s management, and the cricketer from Kerala, who has played 149 matches in the world’s richest franchise cricket league for the Jaipur-based franchise, has formally requested to be traded or released into the auction.

“It is a fact that serious differences have cropped up between Sanju Samson and the Royals management – so much so that the designated captain has formally requested to be traded or released into the auction," the report read.

“Members of Samson’s family openly say that he no longer wishes to continue with the Royals. Some current IPL and international players close to him also indicate that his relationship with the franchise has not exactly been the way it used to be," the report added.

Samson, who was retained for Rs 18 crore by RR ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction, played nine matches in the cash-rich league earlier this year and, with the help of one half-century, scored 285 runs.

He is RR’s most capped player (149) in IPL history and is also the leading run scorer (4027). In the IPL, Samson was appointed as RR captain ahead of the IPL 2021 season, and in the last four years, he has captained the inaugural edition winners in a total of 67 matches and won 33.

Earlier on Wednesday, it was reported by Times of India that RR is not planning to trade Samson or for that matter any of their players. The franchise reportedly wants Samson to be their “undisputed" captain.

“RR have decided not to trade Samson or any of their players for now. Samson is very much a part of the Royals set-up and the undisputed captain of the team," a source was quoted as saying by The Times Of India.

Samson was first signed by KKR in 2012 but was unused and was subsequently released. He then joined RR and made his IPL debut against Punjab Kings (then Kings XI Punjab). He stayed with the team for four seasons before joining Delhi Capitals with RR suspended for two seasons. At the IPL 2018 auction, RR again picked him at his base price of Rs 18 crore and three years later, he was named as their captain. He celebrated the promotion with a century in his first match as their skipper.
