Pique hails Messi-Ronaldo rivalry as an 'incredible battle' between different styles

Former Spain defender and 2010 FIFA World Cup winner Gerard Pique believes Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo have defined modern football through their remarkable rivalry, saying both veterans continue to perform at the highest level despite nearing the end of their careers.

Speaking to ESPN during a Kings League event, Pique reflected on the rivalry between his former Barcelona teammate Messi and Portugal captain Ronaldo, calling it an "incredible battle" that has lasted for nearly two decades.

"Messi and Cristiano have provided an incredible battle between two different styles over the last 15 or 20 years. I think that now, obviously, these are the last years of both of their careers, but even so, we saw in this World Cup that they are capable of putting on some very good performances," Piqué said.

The contrast between the two football icons has long fuelled debates among fans and pundits. Messi has built his reputation on close ball control, vision and creativity, using his low centre of gravity and dribbling ability to unlock defences in tight spaces. Ronaldo, meanwhile, has relied on explosive athleticism, aerial dominance, powerful finishing and intelligent movement, combining physical excellence with relentless goalscoring consistency.

Their contrasting styles helped define one of football's greatest rivalries, with both players setting new standards over nearly two decades while inspiring discussions over different paths to greatness.

The former Barcelona defender also reiterated his admiration for Messi, saying the Argentine's performances at his sixth World Cup further strengthened his claim as football's greatest player.

"I think he proved once again that he is the best player in history with this World Cup," Piqué said.

Although Argentina fell short in the final, Messi played a key role throughout the tournament, scoring eight goals, providing four assists and featuring in all eight matches.

"He scored many goals and led his team to another final. At the end of the day, he couldn't win it, but I'm sure he'll be very proud of everything he achieved," he said.

Piqué and Messi spent more than a decade together at Barcelona, where they won numerous domestic and European trophies.
