(Picture Credit: PTI)Mohammed Shami last played a Test match for Team India in June 2023 against Australia during the World Test Championship (WTC) final at The Oval from June 7 to 11. In that match, he picked up two wickets for 122 runs in the first innings (29 overs bowled) and two wickets in 16.3 overs for 39 runs in the second innings. However, despite his performance, India suffered a humiliating defeat by 209 runs against Pat Cummins’ men. Shami was then rested for the two-match away series in the West Indies, and then due to injury, he missed the next five series – vs South Africa (December 2023-January 2024), England (January 2024-March 2024), Bangladesh (September 2024-October 2024), New Zealand (October 2024-November 2024) and Australia (November 2024-January 2025).He was expected to be part of India’s Test squad for the five-match series in England but was not considered due to fitness-related issues.Recommended StoriesA week after the conclusion of the India-England Test series, a BCCI source has revealed that the 34-year-old pacer, who has 229 wickets to his name in 64 matches, was not dropped due to form but due to fitness. As per him, Shami was consulted by BCCI selectors before the squad was announced, but the pacer himself was not confident about his fitness.“First of all, he wasn’t dropped because of form. Fitness issues are the only reason why he couldn’t travel to England," a BCCI source was quoted as saying by The Telegraph.“After missing the last tour of Australia, his presence was pretty much needed for the England series. The selectors had also spoken to him before finalising the squad, but he didn’t sound too confident. That much-needed assurance from him was missing," the insider added. As per the source, Shami’s Test future is not over, but it depends heavily on his form and fitness in the Duleep Trophy, beginning on August 28.“One also needs to know if Shami himself is keen on making a comeback in the longest format," the source said.“What we need to see is whether he’ll play even if East Zone clear the quarter-final stage and continue to make progress. Will his body permit it, given his dodgy knee and hamstring? In the Ranji game, he used to bowl three-four overs in a spell and go off the ground. So, whether his body can take the rigours of a multi-day game goes on and on to be a tricky question," the BCCI source added.top videos View all Swipe Left For Next Video View allIf Shami manages to impress with his performance in the Duleep Trophy 2025 for the Ishan Kishan-led side, then he could be added to India’s Test squad for the two-match series against the West Indies at home.view commentsFirst Published: August 11, 2025, 18:29 ISTNews cricket Shami To Make Comeback For West Indies Tests?
