Doug King insists that Coventry City is on a “new trajectory” following the purchase of the Coventry Building Society Arena from Mike Ashley. The Sky Blues owner attempted to buy the stadium back in 2022 with a £25million bid, only to lose out to the former Newcastle United owner’s Frasers Group who picked it up for £17m. But King has finally brought the football club and stadium together for the first time in its 20 year history – with this weekend marking the 20th anniversary of its opening. As part of the announcement, King has written to fans. Here’s what he said."Dear Sky Blues family,It is with immense pride and great joy that I am sharing a historic moment with all of you that marks a significant milestone in our journey together: our club, Coventry City Football Club, now has a permanent home at the Coventry Building Society Arena.Today, Covcityco Ltd (the 100% owner of the football club) has completed the purchase of the Arena from Frasers Group. Finally, the stadium that was built for this club over twenty years ago truly belongs to us. Today, it has become ours in every sense. While a stadium is only filled on matchdays several times a year, it is far more than bricks and mortar. It is our fortress. It is where our team represents us in battle and it is where our community comes together, fostering connections and creating unforgettable memories both on and off the field. The future will be about shaping the identity of our Arena, personalising it and enhancing the experience for all those that attend. This journey starts now. But today is first and foremost a special day to celebrate. A day to reflect on difficult years gone by and to look ahead with belief that our club is on a new trajectory. With your continued passion and support, we can now realise our vision and shared ambitions. Onwards. Together. #PUSBDougP.S. This afternoon, as we face QPR, I encourage everyone to get to the Arena early and be part of this hugely special moment. From now on, every matchday penny flows directly back into your football club - our home, our future."This article contains affiliate links, we will receive a commission on any sales we generate from it.
