Novak Djokovic stunned the tennis world by reaching the 2026 Australian Open final.

During the semifinals, Djokovic took down two-time defending champion Jannik Sinner 3-6, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 to make what will be a record 11th career final at Melbourne Park. He also extends his own all-time record by reaching his 38th career grand slam final.

After Djokovic defeated Dutchman Botic van de Zandschulp in straight sets in the third round, he walked over to the quarterfinals after Jakub Mensik withdrew due to injury. While it looked like Lorenzo Musetti would send Djokovic home, the Italian star was up two sets, 6-4, 6-3, when he suddenly retired due to a groin injury in the third set.

Appearing to skate by on luck at this tournament, few thought the 38-year-old would defeat the No. 2-ranked Sinner.

“It feels surreal,” Djokovic said after the match. “The quality of tennis was extremely high and I knew this was the only way to win against him. He won the past five matches against me and I told him at the net thanks for allowing me this.

“He pushed me to the very limit. Tonight has been one of the – if not the best – support for me in Australia. I’m looking forward to seeing Carlos [Alcaraz] on Sunday, even though it feels as if I’ve won [the title] tonight. I hope I’ll have enough gas to stay toe to toe with him.”

Djokovic already owns the record for most match wins (104) at the Australian Open. Cheering on Djokovic at Rod Laver Arena against Alcaraz, his wife, Jelena Djokovic. Before the final showdown, Jelena shared an emotional message with her husband.

On the eve of the Djokovic-Alcaraz match, Jelena couldn’t help but gush over her husband’s stunning accomplishment at the Australian Open. Should he defeat Alcaraz, Djokovic will surpass Margaret Court for the most Grand Slam titles all time.

She wrote on Instagram, “This man… is so much more. ❤️ He has brought me love, passion, joy and the intensity of sharing life with someone who never stops pushing his limits.

Tonight may be sleepless. Tomorrow, he steps into another final. 🫣🥹 Idemoooooo 💪🙏🏻❤️ Australian Open 2026.”

Jelena is the co-founder and global CEO of the Novak Djokovic Foundation. The couple first met as teenagers, started dating in 2005, and married in July 2014 in Montenegro. They share two children, Stefan and Tara.

Novak Djokovic Describes Wife Jelena as His ‘Rock’

During an appearance on the Jay Shetty Podcast ahead of the 2025 U.S. Open, the 38-year-old made it clear he’s still madly in love with Jelena.

“She’s my rock,” the Olympic gold medalist said. “She’s someone that has seen the worst and the best sides of me. She has seen my evolution. She has challenged me on every level. We have grown together, and we have two beautiful children, and we still keep on growing and evolving.”

“We have challenges as every couple, but we have an amazing base and foundation. When we have challenging times in the relationship, we revert to that… the future that we see is the future that we see together.”

“She’s probably the only one in my life, other than my brothers or my one or two friends, that is able to tell me the things that I maybe don’t want to hear. Challenge my ideas, thoughts, and decisions.

“She has been an incredible partner in this whole journey, professionally, privately, emotionally, romantically, as a parent as well,” he continued. “So I still play at this level because also of the support that she’s giving to our family back home. And I remind myself of that a lot.”
