US Open 2025: Donald Trump arrival delays Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner final in New York

The US Open men's final between Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner was delayed by 30 minutes because of extra security measures put in place for President Donald Trump's visit.

The match was scheduled to start at 14:00 local time in New York (19:00 BST) but was pushed back because of huge queues outside Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Security has been increased significantly at the Billie Jean National Tennis Center, with airport-style scanners erected overnight outside Ashe.

"As a result of the security measures in place, and to ensure that fans have additional time to get to their seats, we have pushed the start time," US Open organisers said in a statement.

BBC Sport has spoken to several groups of ticket holders who said they were not warned in advance by organisers about the extra security measures.

Trump is at Flushing Meadows for the first time since 2015.

The president was seen at about 13:45 local time when he emerged from a hospitality suite at the back of the lower tier.

In a stadium sparsely filled with fans, he raised his hands towards the spectators below him.

Trump reappeared - to relatively warm applause - shortly before the US national anthem began in the pre-match ceremony.

There was a mixture of cheers and jeers when he appeared on the big screen.

On Saturday, US Open organisers asked broadcasters not to highlight any negative reactions to Trump during the final.

It was 14:50 local time when Sinner finally served to get the match under way but there were still plenty of empty seats - especially in the upper tier - as spectators continued to try to make their way through security.

Every spectator has to go through an airport-style scanner outside of Ashe, meaning they have to empty pockets into a tray, go through a full-body scanner and be searched if the detector beeps.

At the change of ends after the third game of the opening set, an influx of people entered the stadium to take their seats but many were still left queueing outside.

Martina Navratilova, who won four of her 18 Grand Slam titles at the US Open, expressed sympathy for those stranded outside.

"Let's spare a thought for the thousands of people waiting outside in the drizzle - it's been raining on and off - and they've paid thousands of dollars for these tickets," Navratilova said on Sky Sports.

"It's not that he's coming that's the problem, it's that they only made one entrance for the whole crowd."
