‘Chelsea to hijack Man United’s move for Emi Martinez thanks to Andre Onana factor’

Emiliano Martinez is expected to leave Aston Villa this summer, and Chelsea could be set to hijack Manchester United’s move for the Argentine.

Since his switch to Villa Park from Arsenal in 2020, Martinez has become one of the best goalkeepers in the world.

Last season, the 32-year-old kept eight clean sheets in his 37 Premier League appearances for Unai Emery’s side, as they were cruelly denied Champions League football by a refereeing error.

However, Martinez’s future at Villa is unclear, and with the Midlands club needing to sell for PSR reasons, he could be departing.

Chelsea to hijack Man United’s Martinez move

Last week (20 June) Football Insider exclusively revealed that Man United were pushing to sign Martinez, and were in regular contact with the Argentina international.

However, it has now come to light that Chelsea are in the race for the former Gunners shot-stopper, as Enzo Maresca looks to solve the problems in his goalkeeping department.

According to reports in The Mirror, United are unable to make a move for Martinez unless they manage to find a club willing to pay £35million for Andre Onana.

With the Red Devils stalling, it could open the door for Chelsea to swoop in, and Villa are reportedly offering the keeper to the West London side for £45million.

Man United must swap Onana for Martinez

Football Insider Verdict

Man United are coming off the back of their worst ever Premier League season, as they finished a lowly 15th on just 24 points.

Ruben Amorim took over at Old Trafford back in November, but his tenure so far has been nothing short of dismal, as his side were beaten in the Europa League final as well.

With no European football next season, it is remarkable that United have been able to bring in Matheus Cunha from Wolves, and they are set to add Bryan Mbeumo to their ranks as well.

However, the goalkeeper has been a longstanding issue for the 20-time Premier League champions, and if there is any chance that they can buy Martinez, they must take it.

Onana has flattered to deceive during his time at Old Trafford, making far too many mistakes, and despite being three years younger than Martinez, is a far less desirable asset than the Villa man.
