Arsenal have been warned what can happen this transfer window if they do not move ambitiously enough for their top targets amid worry over Bruno Guimaraes

Arsenal’s move for Bruno Guimaraes continues to drag on through the summer transfer window. It has now been two full weeks since news broke that the Brazilian midfielder had informed Newcastle of his wish to leave and to join Arsenal.

In that time, no official bid has been made despite plenty of unofficial discussions through intermediaries, football.london understands. Newcastle remain adamant that the player is not for sale, but the Gunners are expected to test that resolve with an official offer soon.

But it might not be soon enough based on the club’s experience so far during the window. They have already been caught out in the case of two transfers.

In the case of Jeremy Monga, the club were in discussions with Leicester City but were only willing to go as high as around £6.5million. With the player’s fee set to go to a tribunal due to his age, Arsenal felt in a good position.

However, City swooped in, agreed on a £12.5million fee with the Foxes, and Monga joined. It was a deal which then sparked plenty of backlash toward the club.

With Morgan Rogers, Arsenal had a valuation of around £80million for the midfielder, but with the market swiftly inflating due to other transfers, Villa were looking for well above £100million to get the deal done. Hopeful that over time the stance would soften, Chelsea took advantage, paying Villa what they wanted and convinced Rogers of the move too.

With Guimaraes, the longer this saga goes on, they could face another similar situation. Chelsea have seen a £64million offer for Alex Scott rejected by Bournemouth, a clear signal of their intention to sign another midfielder.

If Bournemouth show no openness to selling at all, the Blues could turn their attention to Guimaraes and pay what is required. Villa, Chelsea and Newcastle all share the similarity of being fined by UEFA for breaching financial fair play regulations.

Arsenal need to have a strong end to the window, and missing out on another top target certainly does not fulfil any such ambition. The pressure is on Andrea Berta to deliver.
