Gio Reyna ends Bundesliga chapter with Strasbourg transfer

USMNT playmaker Giovanni Reyna has left Borussia Mönchengladbach and completed a move to Strasbourg after seven years in German football.

Reyna joined Borussia Dortmund from New York City FC's academy in 2019 and quickly emerged as one of the Bundesliga's brightest young talents. Injuries and inconsistent form, however, stalled his progress, while a loan spell at English Premier League side Nottingham Forest in the second half of the 2023/24 season did little to revive his career.

The 23-year-old switched from Dortmund to Borussia Mönchengladbach last summer, but managed just one goal and one assist in 20 competitive appearances.

Reyna's best Bundesliga bits 🇺🇸

Despite his recent club struggles, Reyna remains an important player for the USA. He has won 43 caps, and featured in all five of his country's matches at the FIFA World Cup 2026, scoring a stunning outside-of-the-boot effort against Paraguay.

Across his stints with Dortmund and Gladbach, Reyna made 125 Bundesliga appearances, producing 16 goals and 13 assists.

Gladbach head of sports Rouven Schröder said: "Gio is an excellent player who unfortunately only showed glimpses of his potential during his year at Borussia and was unable to consistently demonstrate his ability on the pitch due to a number of injuries. We wish him all the best and every success in this exciting challenge in France.”
