Fans and officials are thanking Aussie great David Hussey for his service after he stepped down as Victoria’s head of male cricket on Friday. The 48-year-old played 69 one-day internationals and 39 T20 internationals for Australia during his playing career, as well as 192 first-class matches (including 87 for Victoria).

He’d been head of Victorian male cricket since 2022, but on Friday announced he’s quit the role for an “an exciting new global venture” within the organisation. He’d already stepped down as head coach of the Melbourne Stars in 2023.

With coach Chris Rogers and general manager Graham Manou, Hussey has helped lead Victorian cricket through a hugely successful period. The Vics reached four domestic finals during Hussey’s time in charge, and developed local talents Ollie Peake, Todd Murphy, Campbell Kellaway and Fergus O’Neill into stars.

Manou said in a statement: “David’s influence on the organisation and the broader Victorian cricket community is immeasurable. Through his passion for the game, commitment to excellence and investment in people, David has helped strengthen the foundations of our male high-performance program while leaving a lasting legacy across Victorian cricket.”

The organisation said: “Cricket Victoria would like to thank David Hussey for his outstanding contribution to the Victorian men’s program after almost four years. David’s impact on Victorian cricket extends far beyond his time in the role. Across more than two decades as a player, leader, coach and administrator, he has played a significant role in shaping the success and direction of cricket in Victoria.

“Importantly, David will continue working with Cricket Victoria as he helps establish an exciting new global venture, allowing the organisation to continue benefiting from his experience, leadership and extensive relationships across the game. On behalf of everyone at Cricket Victoria, we thank David for his exceptional service, leadership and contribution to the Victorian men’s program and his continued impact on Victorian cricket more broadly.”

Fans also paid tribute, with one person writing on social media: “Such a great of Victoria Cricket. Keep up the great work David.”

Another wrote: “What a LEGEND. I feel so privileged to have been able to take the field with the calibre of player and person as Huss. Good luck with the next part of you journey buddy.”
