There was a wave of negativity surrounding Newcastle in the build-up to the new season following some high-profile departures while optimism was high at Tottenham after a summer spending spree.

However, there were few positives to take from Spurs’ 3-0 beating at Brentford in last weekend’s Premier League curtain-raiser while the Magpies rolled their sleeves up in a 2-2 draw with Liverpool, who pinched a point in the final moments through Dominik Szoboszlai’s clinical penalty.

Both teams enjoyed midweek EFL Cup wins - a strong Tottenham side cruised past Charlton 5-1 while Newcastle came from behind to defeat West Brom 3-2 - and it is hard to have maximum faith in either claiming victory given they look like a work in progress.

Tottenham were dreadful defensively away at Brentford last weekend, with Marcos Senesi, Jan Paul van Hecke and Andrew Robertson all having difficult debuts, and Newcastle have similar pace to the Bees’ frontline with Anthony Elanga, Yoane Wissa and Harvey Barnes all appearing sharp.

A return for Pedro Porro and Micky van de Ven would aid Tottenham's troubles but their only two clean sheets in their last 19 matches came against Wolves and Everton towards the end of last season.

Roberto De Zerbi's side also found it difficult to create any openings in that clash but having star striker Dominic Solanke back fit is crucial and Savio will be keen to impress following his arrival from Manchester City.

Omar Marmoush will be another great signing for Spurs given there are some big names in the treatment room. Both teams have scored in 12 of Tottenham's last 15 home games, and goals should flow once more.

Newcastle's performance against Liverpool may have been a surprise to some given Sandro Tonali, Bruno Guimaraes and Anthony Gordon were all sold over the summer, but new manager Matthias Jaissle succeeded in getting his team up for the first home game of the season against a member of the elite.

Recreating that performance away from St James’ Park, where they won only four of their 19 away games last season, is the difficulty he faces and the squad still needs reinforcements.

The Magpies went strong with their team selection against West Brom in the EFL Cup but conceded twice, just as they did against Liverpool, who had 27 shots, and Newcastle appear to lack experience defensively and in midfield.

But they have more than enough about them going forward to get at this Spurs side and that could lend itself to a lively encounter. Both teams have scored in 12 of their last 14 meetings.

Resurgent Wissa can show his class

Wissa was restricted to just 28 appearances for Newcastle last season, many of which came off the bench, but he looks keen to make up for lost time.

The 29-year-old started in the number ten role against Liverpool, and his pace and power shone through, but the absence of William Osula means he is most likely to lead the line against Spurs.

Wissa scored three goals in four appearances for DR Congo at the World Cup, one of which came against Portugal, and he had four shots against Liverpool to suggest that his confidence is on the rise. He has also scored two goals in his last three league meetings with Spurs.
