‘Great for him’… Steve Bruce argues Man Utd ‘scapegoat’ is finally being vindicated after never letting down club

Steve Bruce has admitted that he is “delighted” for one key first-team Manchester United star under Ruben Amorim after the Red Devils’ encounter with Liverpool.

The Red Devils have climbed to ninth place in the Premier League after the October international break, with Manchester United beating Liverpool 2-1 on Sunday.

United made a strong start against Liverpool and the Red Devils stunned the Anfield crowd after Bryan Mbeumo broke the deadlock inside the opening five minutes.

Liverpool were trailing for the majority of the Premier League contest before Cody Gakpo tapped in a second-half equaliser against United from close range.

Ruben Amorim watched on from the Anfield dugout as Harry Maguire came to United’s rescue late in the second half and scored the winner in the 84th minute.

Maguire found himself positioned under Bruno Fernandes’ superb ball from the left and the former United captain headed home the match-winner from close range.

The 32-year-old England international returned to the starting XI against Liverpool and Maguire impressed in the three-man backline across the 90 minutes at Anfield.

Steve Bruce, who managed England star Maguire at Hull City, has admitted that the ex-Red Devils skipper has been made a “scapegoat” during his time at Old Trafford.

“I think we’re all delighted for him because we all know him and we know that he’s been made a bit of a scapegoat really for what else what’s [sic] happened,” he told ‘The Good, The Bad & The Football’ podcast.

“I don’t think he’s ever really let United down really and I can’t remember even letting England down either.

“You know, it’s been one of them where he’s been the fall guy. Good for Harry. I’m delighted that he’s got the winner at Anfield, which can stay with him for a long, long time. Great for him.”

Harry Maguire’s telling reaction to Man Utd’s 2-1 Premier League win vs Liverpool at Anfield

United’s result against Liverpool is the first time that the club have won back-to-back Premier League matches under Ruben Amorim since his appointment in 2024.

Speaking after Sunday’s 2-1 win, Maguire refused to play down the scale of United securing all three points against defending Premier League champions Liverpool.

“It means everything,” he told Sky Sports, as per Manchester United’s official website.

“It’s the old cliche, ‘it’s only three points,’ but it’s definitely not. It means a lot more than that to the boys, to the club, to the fans.

“It is only three points on the table, but to come here and do it over Liverpool, and like I said, they have been a top team over the years, and they’ve been a lot better than us in recent years, so it’s nice to get one over them.”

Liverpool have now fallen to a third consecutive Premier League defeat – and four across all competitions – under Reds manager Arne Slot in the 2025-26 season.
