Westmorland Football round-up features opening night winners

The 2026-2027 JMP Foodservices Westmorland League season made its return with an action-packed opening round of games across all four divisions.

However, an opening night encounter between reigning Division One league champions Wetheriggs United and last season's champions Appleby saw Wetheriggs United run out 2-1 winners.

In the other games, Cartmel defeated Kendal United 5-1, following goals by Morgan Dennison, James Baddiley, Aidan Pearson, Sam Mallinson, and Raphael Shibeka.

Calthwaite Juniors picked up an opening night 2-0 win against Greystoke.

Burneside picked two consecutive 3-2 wins in Division Two after defeating Braithwaite 3-2, with Hayden Millar, Andy Gaskarth, and Will Chambers on target.

Dan Wilson's team won by the same score on Tuesday night after seeing off a strong Scorton Saints team at Hollins Lane.

Penrith Reserves defeated Scorton Saints 4-3 on Saturday, with Darcy Lee scoring twice, while Ollie Rebanks and Jamie Dent were also on the scoresheet.

Scorton, who have now lost two from two, scored through James Sutton and Robert Vizor.

Burton Thistle defeated Carnforth Rangers A 5-0 at Curwen Woods, while in Division Three, Storeys of Lancaster A got off to a winning start on their debut in the league after defeating Lunesdale United 4-2.

Jamie Airey scored a first-half hat-trick in Cartmel & District Reserves' 3-3 draw against Burton Thistle Reserves, where James Renshaw, Lewis Greenall, and Kai Berry replied for the visitors, while Kirkby Lonsdale Reserves and Millhead drew 1-1.

Heysham Bay made a winning start to the season in Division Four after winning 10-1 at Lunesdale United Reserves, with Aaron Hoyle's hat-trick easing the visitors to victory.

Calum Chapman scored twice in Ibis Reserves' 5-0 win against Burneside Reserves, with Sam Coates, Dan Gould, and Reece Johnson also on target for the hosts.

Lunesdale United and Millhead Reserves drew 4-4, while Arnside & Milnthorpe Town defeated Staveley United Reserves 7-1, with George Gardiner scoring twice.
