The Brisbane Broncos have continued to strengthen their squad ahead of the 2026 season, securing Aublix Tawha on a two-year contract which caps off an inspirational rise from the worksite in New Zealand to the NRL stage.Just a few years ago, the Hamilton local said his life was “heading in a different direction” before a move to Australia saw his football career take off.“I was living a normal life, just scaffolding back in New Zealand and never really had any thought of playing in the NRL,” Tawha said.In 2023, he made the move across the Tasman to play for the Yass Magpies in the Canberra Region Rugby League competition.Broncos assistant coach, Ben Te’o – who was the head coach of the Dolphins Hostplus Cup side at the time - saw his potential and brought him to Queensland. After impressing for the Dolphins in Queensland Cup, Tawha made his NRL debut in 2025, coming off the bench for the Dolphins against the Knights in Round 16.The 26-year-old went on to play consistently in the NRL for the rest of the season, transitioning from the outside backs to the middle, where he started at prop or came off the bench.“I never thought I’d be here in a million years.I was just watching these players on TV, and now to be playing with them is crazy.Aublix Tawha Broncos' RecruitIn nine NRL appearances, Tawha averaged almost 80 run metres, made almost 30 tackles a game at 93 per cent efficiency and notched up a line break.During his 2025 Queensland Cup campaign, he scored six tries, averaged 107 run metres and produced 20 tackle breaks and five line breaks. Now, he’s focused on growing as a player.“Madge [Michael Maguire] invited me to his house and talked to me about what he wants to do with me, it all just made sense to jump on board,” he said.“I’m really excited, I’ve been back to see my family in New Zealand and I’m ready to come back to Australia and have a crack.“I just want to come in and do my best, help out where I can and improve my game by being around some high calibre players.”Broncos’ General Manager of Recruitment & Pathways, Simon Scanlan, said Tawha will be a great fit for the Club.“Aublix had a breakout season in the NRL this year, establishing himself as a regular first grader,” Scanlan said.“We see him as a valuable addition to our squad, bringing a strong work ethic, aggression and versatility. His rise to the top level is a testament to his hunger and competitiveness, and we’re excited to welcome him into our pre-season preparations as we build toward another big year ahead.Simon Scanlan Recruitment and Pathways Manager
