Gautam Gambhir completed the double of winning the T20 World Cup as player and as a coach.

Batting great Gautam Gambhir has become the first Indian to win the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup both as a player and as a head coach. He was part of India’s title-winning squad that claimed the inaugural T20 World Cup in 2007, then known as the ICC World T20.

Gambhir was the top scorer in the final, hitting 75 off 54 balls as India defeated Pakistan in a last-over thriller. Nearly 19 years later, the former India captain guided the team to another historic triumph, this time as the head coach of the Suryakumar Yadav-led side.

On Monday morning, Gambhir described the victory as the plan of “1.4 billion Indians."

“This wasn’t just God’s plan; it was the plan of 1.4 billion Indians! Each player a WORLD CHAMPION!" he posted on X (formerly Twitter).

Gambhir lauded India’s T20I world cup squad, pointing out their professionalism.

“The first thing is that the players have made me win. I have been saying this for a long time that you are as good a coach or as good a captain as your players. So I think credit needs to go to the players. The way, the professionalism and most importantly the bravery with which this tournament was played. Like the captain said, we play differently in bilateral tournaments, but ICC tournaments are played differently. I think we wanted to change that. I’m sure everyone has seen that," he said.

“If you make more than 250 runs in the semifinal and final, that just shows the quality, bravery, and courage with which this tournament was played," he added.

Gambhir also credited T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav for the way he led the team throughout the tournament.

“I have said this before – I think Surya has made my life a lot easier in this format. I think he’s a phenomenal leader. I think yes, he very rightly mentioned that he doesn’t want to be called as a captain, he wants to be called as a leader, because leader is a far bigger figure, father figure in a dressing room than a captain. And again, I think my simple philosophy with Surya has always been that milestones don’t matter. It’s the trophies that matter," he said.
