The careers of Álvaro Arbeloa and Xabi Alonso have been closely intertwined since their playing days. The pair were teammates at Liverpool before arriving together at Real Madrid, where, six months ago, Alonso succeeded Arbeloa. Now, following the Tolosa-born coach's move to Chelsea, they will also become neighbors in London after Fulham officially appointed Arbeloa as its new manager.Arbeloa signs long-term deal with Fulham"It is a true honor for me to begin this new chapter at Fulham FC, the oldest club in London. I feel a great responsibility, and I am deeply grateful to Mr. Khan and Tony Khan for the trust they have placed in me to lead Fulham in the Premier League," Arbeloa said in his first comments as the Cottagers' head coach. The club has shown full confidence in the former Real Madrid defender by handing him a long-term contract that runs through 2029.After a brief but intense spell in charge of Real Madrid, where he was promoted from Castilla to replace Xabi Alonso, talks between Fulham and Arbeloa quickly gained momentum. Negotiations accelerated once it became clear that Marco Silva would not renew his contract and was set to replace José Mourinho at Benfica. As often happens in football, one managerial move triggered another."Álvaro was one of our initial candidates, and during our meetings in June he presented exceptional arguments for becoming our next head coach," said Fulham owner Shahid Khan."It quickly became clear that he was—and still is—the right choice. I'm delighted that he has accepted the challenge of moving Fulham forward, and I have no doubt that our players, coaching staff and supporters will embrace what his appointment represents for both the present and the future of our club."Arbeloa takes over a stable Premier League sideSince earning promotion from the Championship in the 2021-22 season, Fulham has established itself as a solid mid-table Premier League club.Last season, the Cottagers remained in contention for a European qualification spot until the closing weeks of the campaign, something the club has not achieved since its last appearance in the UEFA Europa League during the 2011-12 season. With the departures of Harry Wilson and Raúl Jiménez already confirmed, Arbeloa is not expected to immediately take the club to the next level that Marco Silva narrowly missed. However, despite being given time to build his project, his first priority will be securing Premier League survival as early as possible."I'm really looking forward to experiencing the atmosphere at Craven Cottage with the Fulham supporters and beginning preseason with the players next week," Arbeloa said during his unveiling."I'm convinced we're going to enjoy an incredible journey together."Ironically, that journey will begin with a home match against Chelsea, managed by his longtime friend and former teammate Xabi Alonso, on the opening weekend of the Premier League season.Spanish influence continues to grow in the Premier LeagueArbeloa's arrival means the Premier League continues to feature a strong Spanish presence on the sidelines.
